In a 2014 study, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated the total economic cost of motor vehicle accidents at $277 billion. In her article “Cellphone use causes over 1 in 4 car accidents” for USA Today, Gabrielle Kratsas mentioned that the NSC report, combined with Texas A&M research institute’s “Voice-to-Text Driver Distraction Study,” warns drivers that talking can be more dangerous than texting while operating a vehicle, and the use of talk-to-text applications is not a solution”. Based on the survey, the manual texting took slightly less time than the voice-to-text method; however, in both tasks, the driver’s performance was almost equally affected.
